Death Education

Good Practice

The Course

The value of Death Education in schools is to enable pupils to recognize and cope with loss and grief, to become more aware of their mortality, and to fully embrace their lives. Death Education provides pupils with opportunities to explore the subject of death and loss both intellectually and affectively, to examine how culture and diversity affect understanding of death and loss, and to delve into the moral, religious, spiritual, and ethical issues involved in death and loss.

The seminar aims to provide teachers with educational tools through which they can discuss issues of loss and grief with pupils in a school setting. The purpose of this seminar is twofold: to give opportunities of experiential approach to proposed lesson plans and to theoretically frame the area of Death Education. The proposed educational tools will be based mainly on children’s books and films as well as on independent activities which can be spread throughout the school year.
