Music, a recognised form of human communication, offers numerous benefits for individuals facing physical, intellectual, or emotional challenges.
About The Project:
Music interventions, which employ a ‘child-centred’ approach to learning, include various activities such as singing, body percussion, playing instruments, movement, dancing, and communication exercises. These methods aim to enhance the emotional, cognitive, and social development of children with developmental delays and disabilities.
Children with autism often exhibit behaviours that hinder their participation and intellectual functioning in music classes. These behaviours may include aggression, defiance, talking out of turn, interrupting, and being off-task. Addressing these challenges is vital for the effective implementation of music-based interventions for children with autism.
The Erasmus+ AutisMUSIC project aims to promote music inclusion in mainstream schools for students with autism. This project seeks genuine inclusion for its target group by harnessing the power of music. The partnership spans across regions in Central, South-Eastern, Balkan, and South-Western Europe, aiming to enhance educators’ knowledge, skills, and competencies in innovative music interventions based on music therapy practices. The primary goal is to improve the emotional, motivational, interpersonal, and social responsiveness of autistic children in inclusive education.
Developed through collaborative efforts involving experts in academia, music therapy, autism, and teacher training, the AutisMUSIC Toolkit aims to empower educators with effective strategies to promote the inclusion of autistic children in mainstream classrooms.
Furthermore, the AutisMUSIC project aims to train a group of teacher trainers who will serve as ambassadors, disseminating expertise in music intervention processes for autistic children and improving educators’ capacity in partner countries. An eLearning platform will expand access to learning, overcoming barriers such as geographical, economic, social, and health-related restrictions, thereby promoting inclusive education.
Our First Meeting… The AutisMUSIC Kick-Off Meeting in North Macedonia
On April 24th and 25th, the project consortium gathered in Skopje to discuss the initial findings of the National research analysing the needs of autistic students. During this meeting, they identified gaps and best practices used in each partner country.
After the meeting, the consortium outlined the next steps to ensure the project’s progress and presented the project’s website. Following the meeting, the consortium visited the headquarters of the host autism organization, Sina Svetulka. There, they engaged in detailed discussions about current intervention techniques aimed at developing social skills in autistic students.
