An Interview with STANDOUTEDU’s General Manager for Erasmus Days: Key Erasmus+ Insights and Experiences

In celebration of #ErasmusDays, we had the opportunity to sit down with the General Manager of STANDOUTEDU to discuss the impact of Erasmus+ programs. This interview dives into the insights gained from their extensive experience in promoting civic engagement, digital literacy, and innovation through various projects

What kind of Erasmus+ projects does STANDOUTEDU participate in?

We participate in a wide range of Erasmus+ projects, primarily focusing on education, training, and social inclusion. Our projects span various sectors, including digital tools, innovation, arts, environmental sustainability, and social integration. We engage in initiatives that aim to equip educators with advanced teaching methodologies, develop digital literacy and citizenship, and promote diversity and inclusion within professional environments. Some of our projects also tackle specific social issues, like supporting people with autism, promoting inclusion through the arts, and building skills in the blue economy.

Are there any thematic pillars you are focusing on within these projects?

Yes, our projects revolve around a few key pillars. One of the main areas we focus on is digitalization and innovation, where we use technology to enhance education through tools like virtual reality, gamification, and other digital platforms. Social inclusion and diversity is another big pillar for us. We work on projects that help vulnerable groups—like individuals with autism, migrants, refugees, and NEETs—integrate into society through education and training. Environmental sustainability is also a priority, with projects that promote ocean literacy, sustainable practices, and green skills. Lastly, we emphasize arts and culture as powerful tools for social cohesion, using creative outlets like visual arts, music, and storytelling to bring people together and encourage intercultural understanding. These pillars reflect our commitment to driving innovation, inclusion, sustainability, and skills development through our Erasmus+ projects.

What challenges have you faced in implementing Erasmus+ projects, and how were they overcome?

Implementing Erasmus+ projects definitely has its challenges, especially when coordinating across multiple countries. Different time zones, cultural differences, and varying levels of expertise can make things tricky. To tackle this, we set up clear communication protocols, hold regular virtual meetings, and use shared online platforms to manage tasks, making sure everyone stays on the same page.

Another challenge is adapting project outcomes to fit different local contexts, especially when working with diverse groups. For example, creating educational materials that work well across different cultures and languages can be tough. We’ve addressed this by doing in-depth field research and involving local stakeholders at every stage to make sure the content is relevant and practical. These experiences have ultimately helped us become more flexible and proactive in managing projects.

What successes or milestones are you particularly proud of in your Erasmus+ experience?

We’ve had several successes and milestones that we’re particularly proud of. One standout achievement is the development of innovative digital tools and resources, such as VR-based learning environments and gamified educational platforms. These tools have not only enhanced engagement but also made learning more accessible for diverse groups, from young children to adult learners.

However, there is one thing that made me particularly proud. That was the fact that multiple projects we’ve been involved in have been recognized as good practices under the Erasmus+ program. This recognition is a testament to the quality and impact of our work across various thematic areas.

In your opinion, what are the most important skills or knowledge that participants have gained through Erasmus+ programs?

I think one of the most valuable skills participants gain from Erasmus+ programs is cultural competence. Working in diverse, international teams gives them a deeper understanding of different cultures, which helps them become more empathetic, adaptable, and better at communicating across cultural boundaries—skills that are not only important in professional settings but also in creating more inclusive communities.

Another key area is critical thinking and creativity. Our projects really push participants to think outside the box, find creative solutions to challenges, and apply what they’ve learned in real-world situations. These skills are incredibly valuable in today’s fast-paced, ever-changing world.

What role does STANDOUTEDU play in promoting civic engagement and digital literacy, especially through Erasmus+ projects?

STANDOUTEDU takes a proactive approach in promoting civic engagement and digital literacy through our Erasmus+ projects. We design and implement initiatives that encourage people to actively participate in their communities while also providing them with the essential digital skills needed in today’s world. By combining these two focuses, we help individuals become more engaged citizens who are prepared to thrive in the digital age.

Through initiatives like the DICE project, we provide tools and resources to help young children and educators navigate the digital world responsibly, fostering skills like online safety, digital citizenship, and critical thinking. This ensures that children are not just passive consumers of technology but informed and responsible digital citizens.

Our projects also focus on civic engagement by addressing social issues through innovative approaches. For example, the ‘Competence+ Diversity/Inclusion’ project promotes inclusivity within public services, empowering staff to engage with diverse communities more effectively. Similarly, projects like ScrollOff encourage participants to critically evaluate online content, helping combat misinformation and promote informed civic participation.

We also emphasize the integration of digital tools like VR, gamification, and e-learning platforms across our projects, ensuring that participants, from educators to learners, become proficient in using these technologies. By doing so, we help bridge the digital divide and encourage a more engaged, informed, and digitally literate society.

As the general manager, what have been the most rewarding aspects of working with Erasmus+?

As the General Manager, one of the most rewarding aspects of working with Erasmus+ has been witnessing the impact of our projects on diverse communities across Europe. Seeing participants grow, adapt, and acquire new skills through our initiatives is incredibly fulfilling. Whether it’s young people developing digital literacy, educators discovering new teaching methodologies, or individuals with autism gaining confidence in daily living skills, the tangible outcomes of our projects make all the hard work worthwhile.

Another aspect I find particularly rewarding is the collaborative spirit that Erasmus+ fosters. Working with partners from different countries brings together a wealth of ideas, perspectives, and expertise. It’s always inspiring to see how these collaborations evolve, and how teams overcome challenges together to create innovative solutions. This cross-cultural exchange not only enriches our projects but also strengthens the bonds between different communities and organizations.

I’m also proud of the fact that multiple projects we’ve been involved in have been recognized as good practices. This recognition validates our commitment to quality and innovation, and it’s a testament to the dedication of our team and partners. Being able to lead STANDOUTEDU in contributing to such a prestigious program has been a truly gratifying experience.
