Seagrass Education For Children Towards Awareness Quotient for Environmental Sustainability
SEAQUEST aims to enhance seagrass literacy in primary education across Europe, fostering environmental stewardship and aligning with global conservation initiatives. Through research, toolkit development, teacher training, tech-based learning through an interactive game, and community engagement, it seeks to build oceanic citizenship and raise awareness about seagrasses’ crucial role in marine ecosystems.
Project Objectives
- Objective 1: Describe the current state of seagrass literacy in primary education in Europe through desk research (academic articles, reports, case studies, etc), and field research in the partner countries (identify gaps in knowledge, understanding, and misconceptions on seagrass concepts and value) to critically frame the project focus.
- Objective 2: Integrate seagrass literacy into primary education through the creation of an innovative, future-oriented Educational Toolkit which will combine in-class, outdoor, technology-driven learning experiences for primary school children
- Objective 3: Contribute to the initial and continuing professional development of primary school teachers through blended training
efforts to give them all the knowledge, skills, and key competences to effectively create seagrass literate students. - Objective O4: Foster oceanic citizenship and build a generation of environmentally conscious and responsible individuals who understand the importance of seagrass ecosystems in the context of global ocean health.
- Objective O5: Contribute to global conservation efforts through the alignment of the project with international initiatives and commitments related to ocean health, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development.
- Objective O6: Raise awareness among students, educators, communities, environmental organisations, scientists, NGOs, the Blue Economy sector, and policymakers about the importance of seagrasses and their role in marine ecosystems.
